Playing E.T.,now that was a cool game for the Atari 2600. I remember being most impressed with the title screen and thought that was a great graphics picture. Especially for a Atari 2600.:)
The object of the game of course is to find the various pieces of your inter-space radio (which as you remember in the movie was comprised of a old record player, a saw blade, a umbrella, and so forth.) the parts throughout the game actually don't really look like anything distinguishable...like the finished product ripped into four pieces. You can find the pieces all throughout the game pretty much anywhere on any of the screens. When you walk over a part of the calling device to "phone home" a symbol up top will be produced. I can't remember if you hit the fire button to pick up the item once you find it... I believe so. I remember finding items and leaving them there till the end of the game. (Mainly due to the fact that if the various police officers, scientists and so forth will remove a part or parts of the device when they capture you).
There is a symbol at the top that signals you have passed over a point that you can "call Elliot". Once you hit the button, Elliot appears and gives you some reeces peaces (tm) and I believe his presence keeps the other chasers away. One cute trick is to lead Elliot around everywhere, not having him actually catch you. (That way the other less friendly humans don't show up.)
Reeces pieces (tm) are found throughout the entire game, and are used for energy.
If you fall into a pit, hold down the fire button and push up. This will levitate you up and out of the pit. This action, and holding the button down for running use large amounts of energy.
When you run out of energy, if you have done good enough, Elliot will come to your weakened body and restore you to health (and give you some reeces pieces (tm)) (Reeces pieces (tm) are a American candy similar to M&M's... a small circular chocolate candy. This explained for the benefit of people outside the U.S. of A.) ;)
In the final scene, once you have the phone all assembled ... well, if you need any further help, write me. :)
Good luck!
